Session 150: The Right Hand of Mimic
It’s time to fight the Turbo Mimic.
It is raining viscera all over the gorge. Griffin and Serra are going to be taking fall damage. They each hit the ground and take 32 Bludgeoning damage. It is raining chunks of mimic, bile, blood, organs, and viscera. We’re out of combat. We did it!
The belch and explosion reverberates off the canyon walls. It carries for miles.
Crimeny wants to know if this mimic has bones. No bones, only teeth. Teeth are bones! Crimeny’s just going to put a few in their pocket -
They’re HUGE. Crimeny can have one. What if we each take one? FINE, everyone can have ONE mimic tooth.
Griffin manages to spot Crimeny. He sees his buddy struggling, and goes over to Crimeny to help them with their giant tooth.
Next Nellie explains to Griffin that we can’t find Jericho. Oh no! Everybody look for Jericho.
Nellie, Shane, and Crimeny manage to find some muck-covered feathers. They have a hushed conversation. Griffin asks if they’ve found anything! Nellie says NO! In a hushed voice to the others she asks, what are they going to tell Griffin? D:
Crimeny slides up behind Nellie and tells her to use Message. Since she has to point her finger at her target, she holds out her finger and spins in a slow circle, firing off the Message cantrip. She rolls 17 Survival to hit Jericho. She’s not aiming her finger at the sky because she doesn’t expect him to be there. She rolls 14 luck, and manages to clip him with a message.
He doesn’t know where he is. He’s gas, he has no senses.
Crimeny wants to try to perceive hidden and invisible things with their Inquisitive feature. They roll a 22.
Nellie and Jericho have a very good Message chat. Nellie starts to walk toward where she fired off her Message. Griffin walks with her.
Crimeny follows Nellie. They look up and they see a weird shimmer in the air. It’s idly floating, slowly making its way down to the ground. They point this out. Nellie approaches it and keeps talking.
Shane and Nellie roll Nature and Arcana on the fart cloud.
They roll good opposing numbers. They’ve got all angles covered. Nellie identifies the Gaseous Form, and Shane is able to tell this isn’t a bi-product of the mimic, this is likely a magical effect that Jericho is currently under.
Nellie asks Crimeny if they have a giant bottle.
Shane casts Dispel Magic on the Jericho cloud. He has to roll Wild Magic: 41.
The shimmering cloud of gas starts to bind together. At first we see the diminished form of Jericho, that is also being dispelled. Jericho starts to grow back to his large creature stats. But he has undergone some more radical changes. His arms have elongated, and instead of the wing hands, he’s got goose heads. Where the barbs were previously is like a barbed mohawk on the goose heads.
Jericho’s mouth has grown long and hard like a beak. His wavy hair is wavy feathers. He’s a goose hydra now.
And when we all turn to look at Shane, Shane is a potted plant. He’s a fern. He’s a potted Fern. The pot says, "Hi, my name is Shane."
How’re you feeling boss?
Kinda hungry. Kinda tired. Actually pretty okay. Kinda confused, mostly.
Once Shane stops being a potted fern, he prestidigitates Jericho clean until he’s not terrifying anymore. We’ve got all of these unconscious people around us. Even after we clean Jericho up, he’s not going back to normal right away. He is still goose hydra.
Griffin calls Aerin to ask for some backup, BUT! At this point, from the direction we approached this hellhole from, the crew sees a contingent of infernal goats and pack mules. They appear to be Horizon militia. They start approaching with weapons drawn, looking around, because damn. This whole area is inundated with viscera.
Then they see Jericho. And their weapons are drawn. Griffin steps between Jericho and the soldiers, as if that’s going to do a whole lot of good. We’ll resolve this next week.
ROUND 1
We are fighting a building and Jericho has no magic right now. But he has something almost as good. He has a Motley Brew, and he’s going to roll those bones. He gets the Potion of Diminution. Reduce the Goose. Now he’s really messed-up looking but the size of Shane.
Hm. That was a bonus action. Now what? He could take another hit. He looks over at Crimeny, who he’s standing next to. He looks back at his bottle of potion. He shrugs. He rolls a 4. Potion of Fire Breath.

TURBO MIMIC lets out a bellowing shriek that reverberates off the gorge walls, and it shuffles. It rips itself out of the ground and makes its way to Serra. It opens up its weird flap of a mouth, where thousands upon thousands of serrated teeth are visible. A bunch of slimy tendrils wind out from between the mimic’s teeth. A 23 hits Serra. A 20 hits Jericho. A 28 DEFINITELY hits Griffin. Everybody is going to take some damage.
Serra takes 12 Bludgeoning damage.
Jericho takes 18 Bludgeoning damage.
Griffin takes 24 Bludgeoning damage.
All three of these clowns are now grappled. They are lifted into the air.
Serra takes 12 Bludgeoning damage.
Jericho takes 18 Bludgeoning damage.
Griffin takes 24 Bludgeoning damage.
All three of these clowns are now grappled. They are lifted into the air.
Serra casts a 4th level Spirit Guardians and requests a Wisdom Save from the turbo mimic. It fails with a 6 and takes 20 damage. She rolls a 92 on Wild Magic. As far as we know, nothing happens. There is no immediate effect.
Nellie has 17 HP. She is prone. She stands up. She really doesn’t want to cast a spell right now, but she thinks she’s got to. Alright. She rolls Nature on mimic intelligence: 24. How smart is a mimic? How smart do you think your lunchbox is? Excuse you, Scott had a Donatello lunchbox, it was really smart!
Nellie points at the mimic’s mouth. There’s definitely a 20ft radius sphere in there. She casts Synaptic Static, and rolls a d100. She rolls a 97. The theme to Cheers starts playing around her, and everyone can hear it. She is surrounded by faint, etherial music for the next minute.
The mimic fails its INT save with a 3 and takes 8d6 Psychic damage: 21. The mimic is now muddled for the next minute. It must now roll 1d6 and subtract that number from any ability checks or attack rolls.

It’s Crime Time. Scott has a question. How wise does this thing look? Crimeny rolls Nature: 22. About as wise as your lunch box. It’s maybe a little more wise than intelligent, but probably not much.
Crimeny steps forward a bit and activates the holo-projectors embedded in their chassis. Crimeny skrionks, and activates their Frightful Presence. The mimic rolls a 3 on its Wisdom Save. It is now Frightened.
Crimeny whistles for their hell goat. They roll Animal Handling: dirty 20. The hell goat explodes out of the canyon wall and beelines over to Crimeny. Crimeny mounts their goat, and starts riding it around the mimic.

Shane moves a little closer to the mimic and casts Bane on it. It fails its CHA save with a 3 and is Bane’d. Shane rolls an 81 on the Wild Magic table. He can take on additional action immediately.
He completes his movement and scurries back 20 feet. Now that he has another action, he casts Eldritch Blast and hits with a 19, 25, and 24. He does 38 Force damage.

Griffin finishes the mimosa that appeared in his hand when he beefed his initiative roll. He uses a bonus action to give the mimic the Stink-eye, cursing it for one minute. He can now do an extra 4 curse damage with each of his attacks.
He rolls a 20 and 22 to hit the tendril grappling him.
First hit does 6 Slashing + 7 (13) +7 Cold + 4 Proficiency (24)
Second hit does 8 Slashing + 7 (15) + 7 cold + 4 Proficiency (26)
He does a grand total of 50 damage, and ends his turn.

ROUND 2
Jericho has this bell he can use to target a creature that has to make a DC16 Charisma save or begin to dance uncontrollably.
The Bane dice says -4. The mimic rolls ANOTHER 3.
Anyone who witnesses the dance, including the Bell Ringer, must succeed on a DC16 Wisdom Save or fall under the effects of Tasha’s Hideous Laughter.
Griffin and Jericho beef their saves and starts laughing uncontrollably as the mimic starts dancing like Flubber to the Cheers theme.

The Turbo Mimic is dancing. It has to use all of its movement to dance in place. It rolls a Baned 0 on its Wisdom Save, and takes 24 Spirit Guardians damage. It’s waving its tendrils in the air like it just don’t care. It’s terrified of Crimeny, who skrionked at it.
It starts to reel Griffin in to its mouth, but it crit fails on the attack. It is overcome with this sudden rush of dance. It is a dancing fiend now. It yeets Griffin into the sky. Griffin blasts off straight into the sky. We’ll deal with the repercussions of that on his turn.
A 22 hits Jericho. He is reeled into the mimic’s mouth, and is swallowed. Wait, synaptic static and bane have not been rolled. The attack roll is reduced to 17. That still hits. Jericho is drawn into the mouth. He is blinded and restrained, but it’s not fireproof.
The mimic rolls max bane synaptic static to hit Serra. It rolls a 0 to hit. She is just being rhythmically swayed around. Serra puts her hands in the air because she just don’t care.
Time to roll some saves: The Mimic fails its Synaptic Static INT save with a 10, and continues to be muddled. It rolls a 1 CHA to try to stop dancing. It continues to dance.

Serra attempts to throw her hammer into the Mimic’s mouth to bonk Jericho on the head. If she rolls a Nat 20 Jericho can grab her mace, and she can pull him out. Guy calls his shot. He uses the Roll20 dice, so that everyone can see his incredible roll.
Serra rolls a Nat 1. She rolls 4 damage. She pulls her arm back and prays to her god. "Let my hammer find its mark. Let me find Jericho and bring him to safety." She releases her chaos-bile covered weapon into the maw of the giant mimic.
And her god answers her prayer. Her weapon finds Jericho in this mass of teeth and tendrils. And then Serra is ripped from the tendril of the mimic and yeeted directly into the mouth to retrieve her hammer. She is now blinded and restrained, but she’s next to Jericho. She found him!
Can she feel Jericho next to her? She feels a lot of things, mostly pulsing meat, everything is slimy, there’s a pulsing heartbeat in her ears which is kind of giving her a headache. She can kind of sense something big and feathery next to her. Welp, that’s her turn.

Two of Nellie’s party members are currently in the mimic. Nellie is going to use her last 3rd level spell slot and Cure Wounds herself. She rolls an 11 on Wild Magic. Next she has to roll a d10: 1. Nellie shrinks by an inch. Nellie is now 3’0". She regains 18 HP, bringing her health up to 35.
Nellie finishes her turn by hiding behind a rock.

It’s time to start piling damage on this thing. It’s time to practice majestic goat-back archery. Crimeny rolls a 23 to hit. Jericho and Serra count as "right next to it" for the purposes of Sneak Attack. They do 26 damage.
Crimeny rides their goat around the mimic more, herding it like a sheep.
Crimeny rides their goat around the mimic more, herding it like a sheep.
It’s Shane Bishop time. He moves south 30 feet and shoots more Eldritch Blasts at the mimic. He hits with three 23s. He does 39 damage to the mimic. Shane’s good out here.
Griffin makes a quick Perception roll. He rolls a 3. He’s up in the air.
He teleports 30 feet to the left from his fall trajectory in order to spike his sword and the momentum of his fall into Mimic like a Legend of Zelda. He rolls a 15 to hit, which misses. One of the errant tendrils sideswipes him a little as he descends, which throws him off. He doesn’t hit the mimic with his sword, and he takes 10 Bludgeoning damage when he lands atop the mimic. He is currently on top of the Mimic. Okay, that’s fine, he has one more attack. He rolls a 13 to hit this time. He totally beefs this turn, womp womp.

ROUND 3
Jericho is in a meat pocket. He breathes Fire breath. Ant and Inky disappear into the Time Out Corner, and when they rejoin the rest of us, they’re laughing, which is always a good sign.
Jericho rolls damage, and Serra rolls Perception. Jericho’s damage roll is 55, as a bonus action. Serra rolls a 19 Perception.
Serra can’t see anything, but she hears the monstrous, guttural honk of her boss. Then she hears that honk in stereo. Like bagpipes. And then it gets very hot.
Jericho takes 24 Acid damage. He feels all the meat around him quiver and constrict. It doesn’t like it. Jericho rolls perception. He rolls a 3. He’s so full of hate right now that he doesn’t notice anything.
He is still restrained. Can he use his action to get out of restrained? Yes. He rolls a 19 Athletics. Jericho begins to crawl his way out of the mimic’s mouth. He shimmies up the meat pipe, screaming in stereo.

The Turbo Mimic fails its Wisdom Save on Serra’s Spirit Guardians and takes 27 damage.
Then it rolls some bones. Nellie has to make a Con save. She rolls a fat 6. She is struck with magical blindness that lasts for 1 minute. At the end of each of her turns she can make another Con save to try to get her eyesight back.
Next, the Right Hand of Mimic disappears. But Griffin is still standing on it. He looks like he’s floating in midair. It’s like a reprise of the Shoosuva fight, although this time the mimic’s invisibility isn’t Griffin’s fault.

Serra takes some Acid damage - 26. She wiggles a little and realizes how hopeless this is. She sends out another prayer to her mystery god and calls for some Divine Intervention. She rolls a 12 on the d100. SHE WAS SO CLOSE. D:
Nellie is blind. But there is one spell that doesn’t require her to see the target. AOE spells don’t require her to see where she’s casting, so she casts Ice Storm.
Ant requests she roll a straight d20. She rolls an 8. She misses Griffin - it’s a little close, but she misses him. The mimic rolls a Dex save with Bane and Disadvantage. It rolls a -2, and takes 24 damage.
There is now an ice shell floating in the air on top of the invisible mimic. Nellie finishes her turn with another Con Save to attempt to regain her sight: 15 - She does not get her sight back.

Scott has a question: Does this thing count as a giant? No, that’s specifically for actual giants, not gargantuan monsters. That’s fine.
Crimeny uses their auto-crit anklet to hit the mimic with their next attack, and does 64 damage. It takes that hit. No one can see it. It’s shrieking and dancing. It’s clearly in pain. The ground below it is getting flooded with weird, mottled black blood.
Crimeny hides behind a rock, and their goat flips behind another rock. It is watching them carefully so that it knows when to leave its hiding spot.

Shane makes his way towards Pippinella. He makes it halfway to Pip, and he Eldritch blasts again. He’s good at blastin’. He rolls a 19, a 26, and a nat 20. He rolls 36 damage. There’s another pained roar and the spatter of blood.
Wait, Nellie forgot to roll Wild Magic! 82! She can take another action immediately! What can she do, she’s blind??? You know what, she casts Message at Jericho. She asks if he’s okay in there. He responds that he’s full of wrath. He’s an overwhelming geyser of uncontrollable rage. So she knows that, now.
Griffin is on top of the invisible mimic. Time for his best spell: He casts sword, and rolls a crit on his first attack and 25 on his second.
Crit hit: 17+7 (24) slashing, 14 Cold + 4 Proficiency (42)
Regular hit 7+7 (14) slashing, 1 Cold, +4 Proficiency (19)
Griffin does a grand total of 61 hurt points to the invisible mimic.
He finds his footing and raises his sword. He buries his blade with all his might into invisible flesh.
The building shudders, and lets out another ear-piercing screech. It seems to be writhing beneath him.
He action surges and hits it again.
He rolls a 23 and misses with a 14. Womp womp.
6 +7 (13) slashing + 4 Cold + 4 Proficiency = 21 damage.
He’s done a grand total of 82 damage this turn. The invisible mimic continues to dance and writhe under his feet.

ROUND 4
Jericho is dragging himself out of this horrible beast’s maw. He takes 13 acid damage. He continues to climb. He has no idea Serra is in there with him. He rolls Nature and Survival to claw his way up. Nature = 21, Survival = 10. The muscles are contracting in a way that seems like dry-heaving. The muscles are trying to push him out.
Time to attack. Jericho is a spicy meatball. Both his attacks hit, and he does 21 damage. His weird wing spines are finding purchase. He is ripping this thing open from the inside and being showered in viscous, mottled black chaos blood. That mixes with the bile beneath him, and he and Serra are starting to rapidly move in a certain direction.
Jericho swigs his Motley Brew and rolls Potion of Gaseous Form. He is farts now.

The mimic has to use its entire movement to dance. But first it has to roll a Wisdom Save on Serra’s Spirit Guardians - it rolls an 18 with Bane, and only takes half damage. It takes 8 damage.
The mimic uses one of its actions to jump. Griffin has to make a Dex save. Ant gives him Advantage, and he manages to roll two 4s on the d20 for a grand total of 7. Griffin falls as this thing rockets into the sky. As it breaches the high ledge of the gorge we’re in, the invisibility wears off. It opens its maw and tons of tentacles splay out wildly. It looks like it’s about to throw up, down into the gorge.
It lets out an earth-shattering belch. And in that moment, the mimic explodes. Serra’s guardians of faith killed it. It was in mid-attack when it just belched and exploded.
