Session 195: Down the Spider Hole
We’re overlooking a sinkhole in the center of this sewage pool, about 20 feet in diameter. This is the room filled with silvery webs and a strung up aberrant zealot.
Let’s roll Arcana on that hole. Ryo wants to know what’s up with that hole before Shane sticks his dick in it. Griffin rolled a 17! But that doesn’t matter because Nellie rolled a 27. Shane rolled a 19.
GRIFFIN: Hey guys, I think that hole is magic!
Shane can confirm Griffin’s hypothesis - that hole is magic! Yeah! Griffin throws up his hands in celebration.
Nellie can see that this hole is a breach in the dimensional wall. The dimensional sinkhole here means that the black body larva we’re looking for has burrowed through here.
Time for Nature rolls. Griffin used up all his INT on that Arcana roll. He rolls a 5. Jericho rolled a 19, though. He sees this hole, and an image comes to mind, something like a caterpillar, or something ready to move into its pupae stage.
It’s fucking Very Hungry Caterpillaring the sewers? That sure does seem to be what’s happening.
Jericho announces that we probably have to go into the hole. In fact, we definitely have to.
Jericho and Crimeny rolled twin 22 Investigations. They observe the silvery webs hanging from the ceiling, and don’t see any Dark Weavers - which is good, but that means one of two things: Either they’re dead, and we haven’t seen the bodies yet, or they’ve gone off in pursuit of the Black Worm.
Griffin asks how are we gonna get down there? Do we just leap in? Serra jumps in.
Bulk and Skull aren’t looking too confident right now. Bulk in particular finally appears to be having second thoughts, Jericho says something smarmy, causing Bulk to leap into the water. Griffin’s frantic throat-slashing motions at Jericho to get him to stop are of no use. Too little, too late.
Everyone jumps into the shit water.
The crew spirals around like detritus circling the drain. This whirlpool is VERY strong, and as soon as we hit the center part of the whirlpool, we DROP.
We find ourselves in an etherial plane mottled and black with specks of white, blue, pink, purple - it almost seems like a cave that extends into infinity. Everyone falls for a couple of minutes, before hitting a reasonably deep pool that is a mixture of sewage water and some other type of liquid. It’s not chaos gunk, but it’s some kind of pool. There’s a stone platform surrounding the pool. We are adrift on this plane of existence that seems to exist between all others. There are boundaries that are frayed that trail off into nothing.
Nellie wants to know if we have a rope we can all tie around each other, rock-climber style?
There are a number of branching paths. Time for more Investigation rolls. Shane and Serra roll twin 7s. They’re tripping balls. This place is a little freaky and it’s messing with them. Griffin manages a 15! Everyone else (including Griffin) examine the frayed edges of reality. The solid landmass we’re currently on and the walls acting as barriers between us and null existence looks like they’ve been chewed.
We’re in gribbled subspace, and we have a worm to find.
SHANE: Here, wormy wormy wormy! Jericho slaps Shane. Shane complains to HR. Griffin gently suggests to Jericho that maybe he shouldn’t slap Shane.
Bulk asks how are we going to get back? It doesn’t matter until we find the worm, does it? Jericho suggests the wizard-y types ponder that while we hunt the worm.
Jericho rolls a 19 Perception. Nothing in particular catches his eyes. The weird inky blackness that permeates everything is weirdly obstructive despite being able to see through it.
Crimeny rolls 27 Investigation to look for worm signs. Thanks to their True Sight, they see movement! But only for a moment. Once they’re looking properly in that direction, there’s nothing there.
They alert the crew that they saw something. They approach where they saw the movement to investigate more closely. There is nothing to indicate that anything disturbed the barrier. Welp.
Time to continue looking. Crimeny rolls a 30 Perception. Ant makes a counter-roll. Crimeny doesn’t see anything, but they hear something. It sounds a little static-y, but as Crimeny moves, it feels like that static-y sound is getting further away.
They can tell that the static-y sounds is right next to Shane.
Does a 22 hit Shane? Of course! Shane takes 13 Necrotic damage as a wiry, ethereal limb reaches out of the wall and wraps itself around Shane’s neck as it tries to pull him through the wall.
He also needs to make a Con save: 6. That fails. His maximum HP is reduced by 13.
We are out of combat.
Griffin makes very sure Bulk is aware he nearly died. Bulk is aware. He promises Griffin he owes him lunch for a month when we get out of this. Nellie would love to use the Banishment spell to send Bulk and Skull back to Earth realm, but with how unstable the realms are, she’s not sure she trusts it to put them somewhere safe.
Nellie asks if Griffin has a rope. He does.
Bulk, shockingly, wants to revisit the Banishment thing. What are the odds that it will send him and Skully home? Shane and Nellie roll twin 23 Arcanas. Griffin somehow rolls a Nat 20. He’s like a junior wizard. He’s allowed to sit at the wizard table, even though he’s not yet been given the title of wizard. Which is fine by him, because he knows where his strengths lie. He’s just happy to be included.
We are pretty much between planes, but the planar system isn’t breaking down - we’re not in the sea of chaos, we’re not covered in chaos goop, we’re literally just existing between dimensions. Realistically, the Banishment spell would definitely send them back to Earth Realm, it’s just a question of where in Earth Realm they end up.
If we banish them back to Earth Realm, would they go back to the sewer? It’s hard to say.
Ant is not going to punish us for a viable solution, he just might do something silly.
Crimeny tells Bulk and Skull to give them their camera. They will record on in their stead. They roll an 8 Persuasion versus Bulk’s Insight: 12! Hot damn!
Bulk asks if Crimeny is going to give them the footage once they’re done recording. Crimeny promises they will receive the footage and the camera back once we return.
Bulk sits down and starts typing a contract in the notes app on his phone. He wants the full footage minus anything that would incriminate the Jericho Investigations team. He encourages everyone to say fuck as much as possible. He learns that Griffin doesn’t swear. He finds that oddly wholesome. Shane will say "fuck" twice as often to make up for Griffin.
Bulk holds his phone out for Crimeny to sign. This is in no way, shape, or form a legally binding contract. But if Crimeny doesn’t sign it, it’ll hurt Bulk’s feelings.
Crimeny signs it Arthur Ray Trace.
Bulk recognizes that name. But he may be mistaking Arthur for someone else. Time for dice: He rolls an 18 INT save - he knows Arthur Ray Trace, the artist! Hot damn!
Bulk asks Crimeny for his autograph - later. His mom loves Arthur Ray Trace!
Griffin gives Bulk his mom’s phone number. He makes sure Bulk put it in his phone properly. He tells Bulk if he and Skully wind up somewhere weird, call his mom. She will come get them, wherever they wind up.
Skully and Nellie have a cute moment. She hugs him. He’s a little surprised, but he hugs her back. He’s getting so many grandma feels. Nellie tells him she’s looking forward to teaching him a lot more magic, once we all definitely survive and return home.
Skully stands up. He says, "Well, I guess we’re ready to-"
Shane doesn’t let him finish. He casts Banishment.
SHANE: I thought he’d never stop talking!!!

ROUND 1
Serra casts Inflict Wounds on the hand, and rolls a 17 to hit, which misses. She moves away from Shane.
Shane makes choking noises. Wait, actually, he can use Misty Escape in response to harm, so he does that. He teleports next to Skully, but Shane’s invisible so Skully can’t see him flipping him off.
As soon as Shane disappeared, the arm retracted into the wall - it is no longer visible. Shane rolls Perception: Nat 20+2. He does a quick look around, and he sees something on the "ceiling" of the north-western tunnel, skittering our way. He also sees something skittering from the north-eastern tunnel, also skittering our way.
He casts Eldritch Blast. One of his attack rolls is a 1. His other beams hit, and he does 21 damage to the Darkweaver. It hits the ground and makes an awful sound. Shane points out the other one to Griffin.

A 13 misses Pippinella, but a crit hits her. She only takes 17 necrotic damage, as the hand reappears from the wall to grip the top of her little gnome head. She rolls a Con save: 11. 17 HP is subtracted from her maximum. She sees something that looks like a humanoid face, but its mouth is vertical and way too big. It has two motes of light where its eyes should be. It’s nightmare fuel.
Except, unfortunately, the PNG file of this creature had transparency in the middle of its eyes, so in the Discord image viewer, it looks like someone’s stuck googly eyes onto it, completely negating its otherwise intimidating appearance.

It uses some of its movement and takes Nellie with it. As it reaches the edge of the visible wall, she realizes its dragging her out to the edge of the aether.

Darkweaver thinks Bulk looks particularly delicious. It arches its thorax and shoots out some really awful silvery-looking webs towards Bulk.
Griffin uses his Reaction to impose Disadvantage on this attack roll. However, baby level 1 Bulk is still hit with a 13. This web hits him right along his back. He yelps, and he’s going to be taking some damage. Bulk takes 11 damage, which puts him at -1. He’s unconscious, but not dead!
The dark weaver starts to reel him in. It pulls Bulk right up to it. Skully shouts that he’s coming!!! But Griffin holds him back with a hand on his chest, confirms that Jericho’s got Nellie, and prepares to go after Bulk.

Jericho steps in and attacks the Breath Drinker that is trying to take away our small medium. All three of his attacks hit for a total of 55 damage. It is still holding Nellie, but Jericho has pierced the shadows of this wispy motherfucker.
What kind of creature is this? Jericho will NOT do a Nature roll. He rolls a 4. He’s a little preoccupied right now to ascertain anything aside from the fact that he doesn’t like this creature. He gives Nellie Bardic Inspiration.

Crimeny’s going to have to run back in. Things have gone to shit. Time for some threat assessment: The one most in danger of immediate death is the fucking clown up there about to be consumed by the Dark Weaver, so Crimeny shoots that Dark Weaver (not the clown) for 36 damage.
It is hurt. It didn’t like that. It’s going to take it out on Crimeny’s friend.
It is hurt. It didn’t like that. It’s going to take it out on Crimeny’s friend.
Nellie apologizes to Jericho, and lets fly with a Thunderwave. Jericho rolled a 17 Con save. The Breath Drinker failed with a 9. They both fail, take 10 Thunder damage, and are pushed 10 feet away from her.
This thing was about to rip her off of that ill-defined precipice, and is blasted back into the aether. Jericho skids across the wall to the north. As she’s released, Nellie does the lalafell windmill with her arms, catches her balance, and then immediately runs into the center spot where Griffin is.
Jericho is bloodied.

Jericho is bloodied.
Griffin runs up to stand protectively over Bulk, and makes his two attacks: 24 and an 18 both hit.
Hit 1 = 15 Slashing, 6 Cold
Hit 2 = 12 Slashing, 5 cold
27 slashing, 11 cold.
Fortunately, Crimeny has done a sizable amount of damage. Griffin rolls a 16 Nature - he has this thing’s attention. It can’t enjoy its meal with this big handsome himbo smacking it with a sword, so he saves his Action Surge.

Darkweaver shoots a web at Shane, and hits with a 27 for 7 Necrotic damage. He is grappled and reeled in. Shane rolls Perception: 16. The Dark Weaver hits him with its silvery webbing and yanks him towards it. As he is yanked towards its indescribably large maw, Shane notices something behind it. Climbing out of the endless aether is a Red Slaad.
Red Slaad rolls in to attack Shane. It hits with a 17. It misses with a 14 and a 10. It’s trying to get Shane, and the Dark Weaver is getting in the way like, "Bitch, no, this is MY dinner!"
Shane takes 8 Piercing halved to 4 from his permanent stone skin.
Shane takes 8 Piercing halved to 4 from his permanent stone skin.
ROUND 2
Shit’s going bad. Serra centers herself a bit and casts Mass Healing Word. Everyone recovers 14HP. Bulk wakes up and starts to panic. Griffin, still standing protectively over him, tells him to don’t move.
Serra rolls a 16 to hit the Darkweaver with her flungen mace - She does 9 damage.
Serra rolls a 16 to hit the Darkweaver with her flungen mace - She does 9 damage.
Shane is staring down the maw of an angry Dark weaver and a red slaad that just jabbed him with a claw. He casts Synaptic Static on the critters menacing him. Red Slaad fails with a 4, and the Dark Weaver fails with a 13. He does 29 Brain Lightning damage, and both critters are muddled.
Breath Drinker makes grabby hands through the wall at Jericho. It hits with a 22 and misses with an 11. Jericho has to make a Con save: Nat 20 for a total of 21. He takes 12 Necrotic damage, he is grappled, but his HP maximum is not decreased.
Darkweaver is going to attack Griffin. It does not bite him with a 15 or an 11. It does get him with a 23, and he takes 11 Piercing and 8 Necrotic. That single bite would’ve straight-up killed Bulk. It would’ve drained him dry. Meanwhile, Griffy is just feeling mildly annoyed.
Jericho is grappled, but he can still make attacks. He will be rolling with Disadvantage because the Breath Drinker is in partial cover thanks to clipping through the wall. Jericho still hits with a 24 and a 19, but he misses with a 15. His two strikes do 37 damage.
There’s a lot of nonsense going on. How is the Dark Weaver grappling Shane looking? Crimeny rolls a 9 Medicine. It’s hurt and confused. Well, Crimeny’s going to shoot it and hopefully get rid of one target. They hit with an unnatural 20 and do 29 damage. The Darkweaver isn’t looking great. It’s barely standing.
They move to stand a little closer to Skully, in case anything MORE pops up.
They move to stand a little closer to Skully, in case anything MORE pops up.
Nellie casts Snilloc’s Snowball Swarm in a 5-ft radius sphere that contains the Slaad and Dark Weaver menacing Shane. She’s going to cast this at the 5th level. The Slaad and Dark Weaver need to make Dex saves. The Dark Weaver fails with a 13, thanks to Muddle. The Red Slaad rolled a 0 after Muddle. Time for 7d6 Cold damage. Nellie does 31 damage.
The Dark Weaver freezes in place and shatters. Shane is no longer grappled. The Red Slaad takes that cold damage, but shakes it off.

Say the line, Fighter: Griffin rolls an 18 and a 19 to hit the Dark Weaver.
Hit 1 = 12 Slashing, 7 Cold
Hit 2 = 17 Slashing, 4 cold
29 Slashing, 11 Cold. He kills the unholy spider monstrosity that nearly killed Bulk.
He helps Bulk to his feet and drags him back to the dubious safety of our little center platform, away from the walls.

Red Slaad is still muddled. It’s going to try some stabs on our good friend Shanethy. Our good friend Shanathan. It rolls a muddled 4, which misses, an 18, which hits, and a 14, which misses. Shane takes 10 Piercing damage.
ROUND 3
Serra rolls Medicine on the Red Slaad: 21. He’s looking a little bloodied. She runs up to Shane and casts Spirit Guardians. The Slaad fails its wisdom save with an 8, and takes 20 Radiant damage.
SERRA: You should come after me, Slaad, and let the little twink go!
SHANE: ...I can handle him!
Serra rolls a 10 to Intimidate. The Slaad looks at her. She’s puffing out her chest, she’s got her arms out, trying to look bigger. It looks at her, and then it looks at Shane, who’s already tenderized. She rolls a 26 Insight. The Red Slaad looks at Serra and thinks, "Too many calories."
Serra is outraged that the slaad basically called her fat. She tells Shane he’d better get away because this motherfucker is hers. She and the Slaad have an amazing conversation held entirely on the strength of Serra’s Insight roll, where the slaad repeatedly indicates that she’s too much of a meal for it, all it wants is a little snack, and Shane fits that bill perfectly.

Shane casts Eldritch blast, but apparently he’s determined to roll nutsacks today. Even his 16 hits, though. He hits the broad side of a barn. The Slaad is very large. He does 34 Force damage.
Breath Drinker sticks a straw in our boy Jericho. It hits with a 21 but misses with a 16. He’s going to take a little sippy-sip. Jericho takes 13 Necrotic damage, and has to make another Con Save: Nat 20+1.
He drags Jericho to the edge of the wall to threaten him with endless descent into the aether.
He drags Jericho to the edge of the wall to threaten him with endless descent into the aether.
Jericho really wants this thing dead. He hits with a 27, a 24, and a 21. He does 63 damage. The Breath Drinker snaps back and starts to fade away into the aether.
Jericho makes a Dex save: 23. He snags one of the Breath Drinker’s googly eyes before it disperses into nothingness. How did the eye persist when the rest didn’t? Don’t ask questions.
He rejoins the cluster of the crew in the middle. He hands Crimeny the googley eye he snagged off the Breath Drinker.

Crimeny has a googly eye. That is a secret tool that will help us later. For now, they take aim at our last target, and somehow hit with a 14. Well, this Slaad IS huge. He is a big boy. Crimeny does 35 damage to the Slaad. They shoot it in the belly where Shane slammed three Eldritch Blasts. He bursts. He’s dead.
We are out of combat.

Shane doesn’t let him finish. He casts Banishment.
SHANE: I thought he’d never stop talking!!!
