Session 190: Sewer Ambush

Crimeny has two options here - one: shoot the Oculorb and run, which is simple and effective. But the problem with that is, it’s simple. On the other hand, Crimeny has a jerry can of gasoline. In the sewer. Crimeny is going to roll a Wisdom Save: Unnatural 20. They resist the urge to Arson. So they take their bow and shoot the Oculorb. They hit the Oculorb with a 25 and do 41 Sneak Attack damage.

Then they use their bonus action to Hide. Now it’s time to jump to proper combat:

ROUND 1

Crimeny rolls Insight on the Oculorb - they roll a 22, it deceives with a 26. Holy shit! It passes! It’s not going to take more Sneak Attack damage! Crimeny hits with a 19, and does 17 more damage. The Oculorb says, "The fuck?!"

Now Crimeny moves, except Nellie is in the space they want to go. So they jump over to the other side of the shit water to clear the way for Griffin.

Dolgaunt rushes 40 feet. Griffin is tasked to roll Stealth. He rolls a 23! The dolgaunt only rolls a 19 to perceive. Griffin remains hidden. It stops where it stops and snaps its head around like it’s listening, and its long shoulder tentacles probe around the corner but just miss Griffin. It’s feeling around for Griffin - or for something - but it finds nothing.

Dolgaunt uses the dash action and uses the water’s current to move well into our part of the corridor, on the Crimeny side of the shit water.

Dolgaunt dives into the water, dashes, and springs out right next to Crimeny.

Nellie rolls a 14 Nature on Dolgaunts - what does she know about these things resistances? They don’t seem like they’re resistant to any elements, they just seem like particularly wiggly mummies. She requires a Con save from the dolgaunt that hopped up next to Crimeny. It saves with a dirty 20, and nothing happens. Well, that’s the risk you take when firing off Cantrips.

Nellie’s good back here.

Shane sees wriggling death. Bulk yells, "Get 'em, British!" And all three dolgaunts snap their heads in Bulk’s direction. Shane glares at Bulk. Bulk gives him the double thumbs-up. Shane double thumbs-down. Shane rolls Perception (6) and he’s just confused by Bulk, who now blows a kiss at him.

Shane can observe two and a half dolgaunts. He moves five feet forward so he can shoot an Eldritch Blast at the dolgaunt menacing Crimeny. He rolls two 16s and a 25 to hit. They all hit, and do a total of 33 damage. He blows its head right off its shoulders.

That one died real fast! Good luck! Shane ducks back behind the corner, ending his turn.

Shane tells Bulk not to run up to it. Here’s his idea - why don’t half of the group split off and execute a pincer move? Griffin and Shane are like NO. Hasn’t Bulk ever played a TTRPG? That’s a surefire way to partywipe. Bulk wants to know what he can do! :<

Shane tells Bulk to watch our backs. Keep your eyes on the water in case something comes out of it. Shane rolls 19 Deception versus Bulk’s 7 Insight. Bulk will keep watch.

The Oculorb disappears from the turn order.

Griffin rounds the corner to do some smacks to the Dolgaunt. He rolls a 15 and a 26 to attack. The 15 misses.

11 Slashing +4 Cold = 15 damage total. It hisses and screeches, but it lives.

Dolgaunt rushes forward, hops in the water, rushes around, and flanks Griffin. It can’t do anything, but it’s there.

Skully asks Nellie if he should try hitting the dolgaunt that just appeared at Griffin’s back. She says sure, just make sure to stay hidden after he fires off his spell. Skully makes a ranged spell attack: 17. That hits! He does max damage, too! He holds his hand out, and a ghostly, skeletal hand appears, and pinches the back of the Dolgaunt’s neck, for 8 damage. He does the Vulcan neck pinch. What a nerd.

The dolgaunt screams in pain, and Skully scrumbles back to hide by Bulk.

Dolgaunt dives into the water and uses its dash action and the current to move 80 feet to hop up on the walkway next to Crimeny.

Serra throws her mace at the dolgaunt behind Griffin. She hits with a 16! She does 7 damage.

Jericho has a dude in front of him, and he’s going to kill him. His first roll is a Nat 20. He’s going to roll damage first before making his other two attacks. He does 28 damage. He cuts the dolgaunt in half with his first slice.

He flies across the shit water to make his remaining attacks on one of the dolgaunts across the way. He hits with a 21 for 22 damage. It’s still alive, but it’s hurt. So Jericho hits it again: 24 to hit for 19 damage. He cuts it down with very little fanfare.

Dolgaunt moves up 40 feet and uses its tentacles to attack Griffin. It hits with a 23 and misses with an 18. It does 10 Bludgeoning damage, and Griffin is grappled.

ROUND 2

Crimeny requires a Deception roll from the Dolgaunt in front of them. It has to beat a 26. It rolled an 18. Crimeny hits with an unnatural 20, for 37 sneak attack damage. It’s dead.

Crimeny looks down the hall and notices the Oculorb is NOT coming. They hop over the water again and take up the rear, because they have A Feeling.

Dolgaunt directly in front of Griffin is gonna go crazy hands. It hits with a 25, misses with an 18. Hits with a 23, and hits with a 21. Tentacle damage is 8 bludgeoning, and fist damage is 14 for a total of 22 hurt points to the party tank.

All Nellie can do is move 20 feet up behind Griffin. She casts Snilloc’s Snowball Storm in the dolgaunt grappling Griffin, and both have to make Dex Saves. The one closest to Griffin failed its wiggle check with a 9, but the one grappling Griffin rolled a 24. Full damage is 12 Cold and half is 6.

Nellie moved up 10 feet, so she moves back to where she was, around the corner, out of "sight" of the dolgaunts attacking Griffin.

Shane comes out from hiding and moves up his side of the shit water to get a clear view of the critters harassing Griffin. He fires an Eldritch Blast at the dolgaunt that’s got Griffin grappled. He misses with two 15s but hits with a 21. He doesn’t want to hit Griffy so he’s being extra careful, and two of his bolts go into the shit water. Shane does 10 damage to the dolgaunt grappling Griffin.

Shane returns to his hiding hole.

Bulk reports that there’s nothing coming up this way. Shane tells him the monsters are intimidated by Bulk’s magnificent presence, that’s why they’re not coming up. He rolls a 25 Deception. Bulk rolls a 0 Insight. He, Shane, and Nellie have an incredible conversation about throwing children. It’s important to yeet the child for their health.

Oculorb is out of the turn order.

Griffin rolls a 27 to hit the dolgaunt in front of him.

10 Slashing, 6 Cold = 16 damage. He puts his sword right between its eyes. It’s dead.

Alas that Griffin is grappled. He has one more attack, but no movement, so he ends his turn here. He can’t reach the dolgaunt grappling him. So he’ll wait for Jericho to save him.

Skully is feeling brave. He moves across the bridge to the weird stone door, and starts recording it.

Serra rolls a 13 Athletics to jump the 10 foot shit-water gap. She misjudges. She flops onto the concrete with her legs in the shit water. She can use the remainder of her movement to pull herself up. She can see Griffin, and tosses a Healing Word his way.

Jericho has a boy to save. He flies behind the dolgaunt. Now he will kill. He rolls an 18 to hit and does 21 damage. He flies over and jabs his sword right into its back.

Crimeny approaches the spooky door, and peeks. Inside there is a dolgaunt. It’s right there, in Crimeny’s face. Hi.

ROUND 3

Crimeny stabs through the door. They hit with a 23, for 33 stab damage. They stab it in the forehead and instantly kill it.

The others see Crimeny open the door, stab in, and then when they withdraw their arm it’s covered in viscera.

They open the door further and see inside what appears to be a temporally-displaced tomb. The stonework, architecture, and the sarcophagi do not look like they are from Earth Realm.

Well, you know what that means. Time for grave robbery.

We are out of combat. Crimeny goes into the room. Griffin joins Crimeny in the spooky room. If he sees any crimes in progress, he will not attempt to stop them. Crimeny rolls a 22 Investigation to check the sarcophagus for traps. It does appear to be trapped.

The nature of the trap isn’t necessarily meant to deter people from opening it - it’s more like a challenge. "Open me and see if you can survive."

Crimeny is going to roll Sleight of Hand on the trap to disarm it. You know what would be really great right now? Some Inspiration. Jericho sings Crimeny a little song. Crimeny rolls a 30 Sleight of Hand to disarm, thanks to Jericho’s song.

Crimeny feels around. They find something that appears to be a tension wire. If the tension wire is pulled too sharply, the trap will go off like a grenade. Except the entire coffin-ophagus is the grenade.

Ant says Crimeny is going to need to roll Athletics to open the lid. Crimeny looks to Griffin. Griffin asks Crimeny how they want the coffin opened - slowly or quickly? Crimeny tells him to open it quickly. He flips the heavy lid off with a 21 Athletics.

Inside is the skeletal remains of a humanoid. It is Shane-sized. How is it non-human? The skull is not human.

Griffin rolls a 6 Medicine on the skull. He asks Nellie if she wants to come look at it! She comes in and rolls a 14 Medicine. She invites Serra to come look. Serra rolls a 26 medicine.

She picks up the skull. The back of the skull is a little elongated. The orbital bone is very small. So they have tiny eyes and little noses?

NELLIE: Hey, what the hell am I doing!? Set that down for a second!

She brandishes her lantern staff. Ghostly images appear. Not just in that coffin, though - in the four tombs behind us. These five humanoids are tall, muscular, lanky. They appear to have very large, almost bat-like ears, small eyes, almost non-existent noses, and they all appear to be fighting something.

The person in the large coffin appears to be the leader and the other four appear to have been an honor guard or vanguard. In Character we have no idea what these are. Out of Character, these are githyanki.

Crimeny is allowed to stealth out the githyanki’s ribcage. They roll an unnatural 20 Sleight of Hand. Only Nellie sees Crimeny.

NELLIE: Crimeny, that’s how you get haunted.

Crimeny slowly puts the ribcage back.

The moment Nellie turns, Crimeny tries again. They roll a 21 Sleight of hand. This time Griffin sees Crimeny. HE ROLLED A NATURAL 20! HE SEES! He stares at Crimeny. Crimeny looks up and meets Griffin’s eyes. Griffin just says, "Bro. Really?" He’s not mad, he’s just disappointed. Crimeny says, "Can I offer you some ribs?"

INSIGHT: 15. Griffin knows that Crimeny knows Griffin’s favorite rib joint, the place he doesn’t go to very often because it’s a bit on the pricy side. Griffin knows Crimeny has way more money than they know what to do with.

He looks into Crimeny’s eyes. He looks at the ribcage in Crimeny’s hands. He looks back into Crimeny’s face. "Yeah, okay." Griffin is easily bribed with food.

Crimeny adds one Gith ribcage to their inventory.

Nellie explains what kind of jewelry is typically haunted. Necklaces are pretty likely to be cursed, ESPECIALLY lockets. Also, dolls are frequently haunted. Is "haunted" and "cursed" the same thing? There’s a lot of overlap.

Serra and Crimeny notice Skully has broken off and is filming the other coffin-ofagi. One of the lids has broken off a bit, so he sticks his camera in. He says, "Hey, guys, this one is still kind of juicy."

Griffin tells him to back up away from that one. He does.

Nellie goes to investigate, flanked by her beef boys Jericho and Griffin.

There is a hole in the sarcophagus - what do you do?

Nellie peeks in. What does she see? These remains seems to have something growing on the bone. Picture the Venom symbiotic. It looks familiar to Nellie. Is it the Goop? It’s the Goop. She tells Jericho not to touch the goop. Bulk wants to know what’s the goop? Griffin tells him it’s chaos jizz - his hope is that by describing it in the grossest way possible it will actually make Bulk not want to touch it.

Bulk isn’t going to touch the chaos jizz. Griffin rolled a 22 insight. Serra rolled a 28. Bulk definitely isn’t interested in touching the chaos jizz. Griffin’s ploy worked.

Nellie rolls a 26 Arcana on the goop. Why is it here? We’re dealing with a creature from the Sea of Chaos (our egg baby). This room has been superimposed over whatever was originally here. It’s entirely possible that whatever caused this to breach the barrier between realms, there might be some residual chaos juice.

We decide to leave the sarcophagus room before it can phase back to wherever it came from.

We’re going to explore North-West. Crimeny scouts ahead. They roll Stealth and Perception. They hear what sounds like a battle, coming from deeper in, the way Crimeny is going. They assume the sounds are coming from around the bend.

They hop the channel and go up to the end and peek around the corner. The sound of fighting has gotten louder, but Crimeny doesn’t see anything from where they are. They slide around the corner and peek around the next corner. They roll a 29 Perception.

There appears to be a makeshift camp - it looks like some building or part of a building or campsite got Bethesda-clipped into this part of the sewer. They see four Chuul that appear to be fighting with three humanoids. These humanoids look like the spirits we saw in the crypt, but these Gith are very much alive. They have frog-like green skin, and they’re fighting the Chuul.

Crimeny fires off a text - "People in danger, get over here."

The closest Chuul gets an arrow to the back. Crimeny rolls a 29 to hit, and does 34 damage. It screeches and lurches, and turns towards Crimeny.

The Gith warrior looks Crimeny’s way. He says something to his allies. Crimeny rolls Insight: Unnatural 20. Crimeny has seen enough fights to know that the command issued and the body language read as, "More enemies." As if they’re preparing to fight against us.

Well, we’ll clear that up after the Chuul are dead.
