Session 180: The Abhorrent Overlord

ROUND 14

Mr. Bishop continues looking out. He’s gonna hang out there.

Griffin is piggybacking Serra. He’s going to grab Shane. He dashes off the edge of the platform with his eagle whistle and nyoooooms across the void. He can only make it halfway on this turn.

Abhorrent Overlord sees Griffin blowing this whistle and flying, carrying Serra and Shane. He flies out, and holds out a hand to Griffin. In his mind, Griffin hears the command, in Infernal: "spit out the whistle"

Griffin’s first wisdom save is a 6.

I’m going to use his Advantageous Pocket Watch to reroll that save with Advantage.

His next two rolls are another 6, and a Nat 20. Griffin does not spit out the whistle. He glares at the Overlord. He points to his eyes, he points to the Overlord.

Nellie delays her action until after Jericho’s turn.

Crimeny uses action, bonus action, and movement to sprint 90 feet.

Shane is going to take potshots at the Overlord. He’s in the arms of the Griffy, he’s out of spell slots, all he can do is Eldritch Blast. He hits with an 18, a 24, and a dirty 20, for 34 pew-pew damage.

Jericho flies 30 feet and casts Ralothim’s Psychic Lance. The Overlord needs to make an INT save. It saves with a 19. He still takes half damage: 12 halved from 24.

Now that we’re nice and close to the group, Nellie deploys the toad. Seikilos plops onto Serra’s head, then over to Griffin, and then finally to Shane. He now has an emergency toad, in case he falls and Nellie needs to cast Fly.

Now, Nellie uses her action. She’s got a gun. Time to shoot. But she also has Cantrips. She casts Frostbite. The Overlord saves with a 25 and takes no damage.

Serra can reach out and cast Cure Wounds on Nellie - she recovers 13HP.


ROUND 15

Mr. Bishop stays where he is.

Griffin uses his action, movement, and bonus action to finish flying across the gap and land on the platform, depositing Serra right next to the blood pump.

Abhorrent Overlord uses a bonus action. He holds out a hand, and the air around Jericho and Pippinella begins to smoke. Three Cambions are summoned in, flying, ready to fight. Then he flies off to observe from a distance.

Then he tries to cast Crown of Madness on Shane. Shane is immune to being charmed, and in fact, due to his fae patron, can use his reaction to turn the charm back on the caster. For a moment, a spectral crown appears on Shane’s head, but Shane waves it away like it’s a bug. He waggles a finger at the Overlord and says, "No! You!"

Nellie rolls Nature and Arcana on the Cambions to see what she’s working with. 17 Nature and 23 Arcana. Elemental resistances are cold, fire, lightning, and poison. Okay - Acid it is.

She burns her last fourth level spell slot, along with one of her twin touches. She casts Dragon’s Breath - Acid on herself and Jericho. Damage is 5d6 Acid on a failed save. She aims at the Cambion in Jericho’s flight path and unloads. It fails its dex save with a 12, and takes 19 Acid damage. It hisses. Nellie sticks her tongue out at it.

Cambion just had acid breathed at it, so it flaps over to attack Pippinella. Actually, since Jericho is carrying Pippinella, it forces him to roll a Wisdom save. He rolls a 22. It tries to command Jericho to "Drop", but he said, "No."

It flies away, closer to the Overlord.

Crimeny continues to run. The machine in this corner hasn’t been touched. Can they do anything to it to make it easier for Serra when she gets here? They roll Arcana: 19. Then they roll Religion: Nat 20 (24 total). When it comes to holy water and the catholic church. If you combine holy water into a container that contains the same amount of water, the whole thing is now holy water. Crimeny has some blessed Perrier, and Crimeny has some bleach.

Time to roll Mechanics on the pump: 16. The only intakes they’re seeing are the pipes coming from the pools. Crimeny will cut into the intake valve with their spade and insert the blessed bleach.

They hear the machine start to rattle.

Cambion hits Pippinella with a 19, and she takes 14 Fire damage from its fire ray. She saves on Concentration with a dirty 20.

Shane Bishop has just shrugged off the Abyssal Overlord’s Crown of Madness. He rolls Insight on the Cambion that flew over to the Overlord. It definitely recognizes that its boss isn’t acting right, so it’s flying over to slap some sense into its boss. Shane shoots at that Cambion with Eldritch Blast. Only one of his three beams hit, for 13 Force damage.

Then he hides behind the pump, screaming Shane-isms at the Cambion all the way. He rolls a 27 Intimidation versus the Cambion’s 15 Insight. The Cambion is angy.

Cambion flies up behind Jericho and is going to attempt to plunge its spear right into Jericho’s back.

JERICHO: Now, sir, usually you have to pay to do back shots!

It hits with a 21. He takes 9 Piercing and 10 Fire, and rolls an unnatural 20 strength save to continue holding Nellie.

Jericho is going to hit this Cambion with his scimitar. One of his attacks is a crit, and all three of his attacks hit. He does 18, 24, and a crit 29 for 71 total damage. The Cambion is bloodied.

Serra’s gonna move up to the pump and start channeling.


ROUND 16

Mr. Bishop shouts across the arena - "Should I stay here?" Shane tells his dad to shoot the little guy flying at the big guy. Definitely don’t shoot the big one though.

Mr. Bishop’s first shot to hit is a 2. That one grazes the tank Shane is hiding behind. His second shot is a 3 - it pings off the tank Shane is hiding behind, also.

Griffin steps around Serra in an attempt to intercept the Cambion when it comes for Shane.

Abhorrent Overlord is charmed by Shane. It flies over and attacks the Cambion. First attack is a crit fail. Second attack is a 23 that hits. He does 10 slashing and 17 Necrotic for 27 total damage to his ally. It saves on Wisdom with a 21, ending its own Crown of Madness.

Nellie breathes Acid on the Cambion on Jericho’s ass. It saves on dex and takes half damage: 8 halved from 16. It’s hanging in there. She’s going to take a moment to get a better grip on Jericho. She koalas a little harder.

Cambion flies down south and totally circumvents Griffin’s good plan to block it from attacking Shane. It shoots at Shane with Disadvantage because he’s hiding. It hits with a 17, and does 16 Fire damage.

Griffin drops back into the turn order and casts Sleep at the 2nd level on the Cambion that shot Shane. He rolls 7d8 for a total of 34. This is enough to put the Cambion to sleep. It falls out of the sky and splashes into the lava below.

Now that Crimeny has done their bleach crime, they mosey south along the walkway towards Griffin, Serra, and Shane. They’re a little out of range to shoot the Overlord, but they can prepare a shot. They have a thermos of Chaos Juice from the Right Hand of Mystra mimic building. They prep a couple of arrows by dunking them into the chaos juice.

Cambion tries to stab Nellie with a two-handed spear attack. It hits with an 18 and does 9 Piercing and 8 Fire damage. She saves on Concentration.

Shane is going to shoot at the Cambion that just stabbed Nellie. Two of his eldritch beams hit, and one of them is a crit. Ryo rolled three 6s for 28 damage. It whips around. Shane flips it off. He rolls Intimidation: 15. This Cambion is not impressed. Shane ducks valiantly behind his hidey-hole.

Cambion makes some attacks on Jericho. It hits with a dirty 20 and misses with a crit fail. The crit fail hits Nellie. Jericho takes 10 Piercing and 10 fire damage. Nellie takes 5 Piercing and 3 Fire.

Jericho retaliates with Murder. He hits with two 23s and misses with a 17. He does 19 and 20 damage for 39 total damage. He slices this creature down the middle. He turns to the other Cambian, and points at his eyes, then points to it. He rolls to Intimidate: 25. It fails its Insight. Maybe it won’t destroy him, maybe it will go destroy that little twink.

Serra successfully sanctifies the third machine.


ROUND 17

Mr. Bishop tries to shoot the Overlord, but crit fails and shoots the phone out of Shane’s hand. Now he’s lost his pictures of Chungus, Nekonomicon, and his roommate lifting things over his head. Mr. Bishop wants to know why Shane doesn’t use the cloud? Also, why does Shane have photos of his roommate lifting heavy objects?

Mr. Bishop’s second shot is a 2. We have regressed to the mean.

Griffin moves 30 feet to get between Serra and the Overlord. He tries to cast the Chill Touch cantrip on it, but misses with a 10.

Overlord flies to the center, and summons something with a bonus action. He points to the final machine, and a massive cloud of black flame appears and falls into the blood pool. What crawls out is another Relentless Juggernaut.

Nellie breathes Acid on the remaining Cambion. It fails its save with a 14, and takes 24 Acid damage.

Crimeny looks behind themself and has instant flashbacks to the first Juggernaut we fought. But we need to get to the platform the juggernaut is on, so…Crimeny studies it with a 30 versus its 3 Deception. They have its number, now. They hit it with a 23 and their chaos juice arrow. They do 41 Psychic damage, and Scott rolls a d4: 1.

The Juggernaut yanks the arrow out and throws it away. It takes a step forward, and lurches. The inky black chaos seeps out of the wound, and he begins clutching at himself. He drops to one knee.

Crimeny’s not done with their turn. Bye!!! They run.

The d4 Scott rolled has added a 1 to the Juggernaut’s CR. It’s taken a knee. Its body begins to transmogrify. It spasms and jerks, and takes on a sickly bluish, greyish hue - its skin grows mottled and erupts in tendrils. It reaches up and grabs the helmet on its head, and rips it off as the transformation completes. In its place stands a humongus Star Spawn Seer.

Griffin asks Crimeny what Crimeny did. Crimeny does not reply. The Abhorrent Overlord laughs.

The Seer hits Crimeny with a 23. They take 25 Psychic damage from the psychic orb. Crimeny Uncanny Dodges and takes that down to 13.

It moves to follow Crimeny.

Cambion is going to try to go after Shane, so Jericho takes his attack of opportunity. He rolls a 21 to hit, and does 16 damage. Nellie tries to shoot it with her opportunity attack, but she only rolled a 12. She tried to pistol whip it, but her arms are too short. It flies 60 feet but doesn’t have a line of sight to Shane, so it uses its action to dash. It flies right into Shane’s field of vision.

Shane hits the Cambion with all three of his Eldritch Blasts for 28 damage. He hits it in the face, the chest, and the face again, and he kills it.

This has become a very easy turn. Jericho dashes 60 feet in the air.

Serra moves 30 feet toward the Seer. She is now 75 feet away from it.


ROUND 18

Mr. Bishop rolls a 12 and misses the Seer. Then he rolls a 27 and finally hits. Except he doesn’t hit the Starspawn Seer, he hits Shane. The moment he pulled the trigger, the Seer used an ability to swap places with Shane. Shane takes 18 Piercing damage.

Griffin is suddenly in range of his next target, so he does what Griffin do, and steps to the Seer and starts hitting. He uses a bonus action to cast Wrathful Smite, and he hits with a 28 and a 24.

Hit 1 = 15 slashing, 5 halved to 3, and no psychic damage because it’s immune: 18
Hit 2 = 11 slashing, 7 halved to 4: 18

36 total, and the Seer is ALSO immune to Fear, so Griffin totally wasted that spell slot.

Overlord flies closer to Jericho and Nellie. Jericho has to roll a Wisdom Save: 6. He is afflicted with Confusion. Actually, Nellie has to roll that save, too, since Confusion is an AOE: 21. She’s fine. Jericho can’t take bonus actions or reactions, and has to roll 1d10 at the start of his turn to determine his action that turn. He can repeat the save at the end of his turn.

Nellie doesn’t notice Jericho is confused, she just fought off whatever that spell effect was. She’s going to delay her action until Jericho surely brings her to safety.

Crimeny takes one step forward to get into range, and they’re going to help Griffin. By shooting. Does a 25 hit? It hits. They do 31 sneak attack damage. Crimeny uses a bonus action health potion and recovers 15HP. Then they back up a bit more. Just a bit. That’s their turn.

Seer makes Griffin roll a Wisdom Save. He rolls a Nat 20. Somehow. That’s a 21. He’s not teleported, but he’s going to take all the damage. Almost max damage, in fact: 34 Psychic damage. The Seer looks frustrated because he was going to go after Serra, but Griffin is still in the way. He walks around Griffin but avoids an attack of opportunity.

Shane dashes down south to try to usher Serra up north and guard her with his small twink body.

Jericho is confused. He rolls 1d10 to determine his action: 6. The target doesn’t move or take actions. NOW Nellie notices something is wrong. Jericho rolls another Wisdom Save: 14. Nope. He’s still confused. Nellie is Concerned.

In light of the circumstances, Nellie is going to hit herself with a 2nd level Cure Wounds. She recovers 17 HP.

Serra dashes 60 feet north.
