Session 176: Deeper Into Hell

We’re gonna aggro the Galbrezu and kite him into his own trap. We don’t know how far the acid is going to spray, so Griffin posts up to one side of the corridor opening. The hellhounds are asleep, so Crimeny is going to step into the room with a 31 Stealth. The Hellhounds roll a 16 to perceive. They perceive nothing. Crimeny rolls to shoot Brittany the Galbrezu with a 25. Scott rolls the absolutely most average damage he could with his 8d6, for an even 30 damage.

The Metal Gear Solid "Brrrring!" Goes off. Crimeny books it back to the crew.

The Galbrezu runs to the opening, then rounds the corner, and the trap doesn’t trigger. Shane is annoyed! He rolls a 24 Arcana - why didn’t the trap trigger??? He realizes that the demons move through here, and the traps are likely attuned to the demons, so they won’t be triggered.

ROUND 1

Crimeny peruses their Bag of Tricks. They still have the cast iron pot from the infernal gumbo. They would like to throw that on the pressure plate. They are not proficient in pot. They roll a 15 to hit. It barely bumps the plate. The nearest hellhound catches the scent of infernal gumbo. That hellhound will be rolling with disadvantage on its turn because it is distracted by good smells.

Crimeny uses a bonus action to disengage. We’re going to manually step on the plate. YOLO, why the fuck not!

Now Hellhound, Crimeny, and Galbrezu are making Dex saves. Guess who rolled a Nat 20 for no damage! Galbrezu saved with a 21. Hellhound failed. Full damage is 31, half is 16. The cast iron pot melts away. Crimeny returns to their original post with the rest of their movement.

Serra rolls 4 Arcana, she has no idea if the trap can be triggered again. She casts Sacred Flame on the Galbrezu - it fails its Dex Save with a 16, and takes 16 Radiant damage.

Time for the undamaged Hellhound. It delays since the Galbrezu is taking up the corridor.

Hellhound the second also delays.

Brittany steps into the room, still within 5 feet of everybody. Crimeny, Jericho, Griffin, and Serra need to roll Wisdom Saves. Griffin uses Aerin’s talisman to add a d4 to his 15, and saves with a 19. Serra saves with a 24. Jericho and Crimeny are Confused.

Hellhound runs up to bite Griffin. Actually, it breathes fire breath. Jericho and Griffin need to roll Dex saves. Griffin saves with a 14, and Jericho saves with a 25. Full damage is 16, half is 8, quartered is 4.

Hellhound runs up to Crimeny and breathes fire. Crimeny, Serra, Shane, and Nellie all have to make Dex saves. Nellie and Shane fail, Serra and Crimeny succeed. Full damage is 24, half is 12.

Nellie has a nice cluster of targets. She uses a 4th level spell slot to cast Snilloc’s Snowball Swarm. All three creatures fail their dex save, and take 24 cold damage. The Hellhound nearest to Griffin dies as a snowball formed around a rock beans into its skull.

As a bonus action, Nellie drinks her only Greater Healing Potion. She recovers 16 HP.

Shane tries to hide behind Crimeny. He sees the big Galbrezu. He has 32 HP. He has no health potions. So he’s not going to heal. He casts Eldritch Blast. His first roll is a 1. His other two rolls are twin 12s. He rolls damage on his crit 1: 5. Jericho takes 5 force damage.

Shane retreats to hide behind a statue where his dad is.

Griffin rolls a 15 and a 17 to hit the Galbrezu.

Hit 1 = 15 Slashing, 5 Cold (halved to 3) - 18
Hit 2 = 15 Slashing, 3 Cold (halved to 2) - 17

35 total damage. Griffin rolls a 10 Insight on Jericho to know whether or not he’s confused. He thinks Jericho is fine. He doesn’t action surge because he thinks Jericho’s got this!

Jericho rolls a 5 on the confusion table and doesn’t take any actions this turn. He rolls a Nat 20 on Wisdom, and the Confusion clears up.

There is a long conversation between Shane and his dad. Mr. Bishop wants to know why everyone calls Shane’s Death Stranding spell "The Fap Zone." Griffin explains it’s because it sounds like sex. More shenanigans are had. The Galbrezu tells us to take all the time we need for this chat. Shane takes 2 Psychic damage as he comes to terms with the knowledge that his father has had sex.

ROUND 2

Crimeny rolls a d10 - 3. They don’t move or take actions. They fail on the Wisdom save with a 13 and remain confused.

Serra casts Inflict Wounds at the 2nd level on the Galbrezu. She rolls a 23 to hit, for 23 damage.

Hellhound is going to bite Crimeny. It misses with a 19. That’s its turn.

Brittany comes out swinging, and attacks Crimeny. He hits with a 24, for 14 Bludgeoning damage, and Crimeny is grappled.

Second attack is to Griffin - he hits with a 26, for 16 Bludgeoning damage. Griffin is also grappled. Those are its two pincer attacks, now it has two fists. It hits Serra with a 23 and does max damage 10 - it takes 10 Radiant damage from Serra’s armor. It hits Jericho with a 27 for 8 damage.

Nellie forces a Con save on the Hellhound - It saves with a 21. Nothing happens.

Shane casts Eldritch Blast again. Everything he rolls is over a 20 this time, thank god. Those all hit the Galbrezu. He does 27 damage. He kills the Galbrezu. Woo!

Griffin moves in to take care of the remaining Hellhound. He rolls a 14 and 16 to hit. The 14 misses. He does nearly minimum damage with an 11. Everyone is confused, even the Hellhound - they were all sure Griffin had that one! Griffin is also confused, but he makes the Will Smith pose at the Hellhound, inviting Jericho to finish it off.

Jericho hits with a 16, a crit, and misses with an 11. The regular hit does 24 damage, and the crit does 35. There’s no kill like overkill! Jericho perfectly bisects this dog up the middle.

Does the confusion go away when the Galbrezu dies? Yeah, for simplicity’s sake we’ll say yes. What does a 9 get, just for posterity? The target chooses its behavior. Aww. Scott is disappointed. Ant promises to throw more Confusion spells at Crimeny, specifically.

We’re going to take a short rest. Griffin has 4 hit dice left. He uses them all, and they all suck except for one. He also uses his Second Wind because he gets that back after the end of the long rest. The Second Wind also sucks. The Song of Healing dice from Jericho sucks. He’s still missing 37HP even after all that.

Griffin uses his shield’s Aura of Vitality to recover the rest of his HP (37). He heals Nellie up to full (30), and gives Shane the remaining 7.

We collect our crime child and venture forth. They notice some pressure plates under the chandeliers and text the group to inform them of the plates. They move forward to the next corridor. They see another Galbrezu down at the end. He’s currently looking away, leaning against one of the statues. Crimeny sneaks up and takes a look around the corner. They see a large archway, and stairs leading down beyond that.

They return to the group and report their findings. We’re going to try to sneak by the Galbrezu. If he notices us, Shane will Banish him.

Griffin asks Nellie for a Guidance cantrip. He rolls an 18 total sneak. But that doesn’t really matter because Nellie rolled a 3. There is nothing the Galbrezu can roll to fail this Perception check. He rolls a 26. He heard literally everyone but Crimeny. It charges. Shane casts Banishment. The Galbrezu rolls a 26 Charisma save, and remains on this plane.

Welp.

Griffin steps in front of Shane.

ROUND 1

It doesn’t know Crimeny is there. They get a little distance, and shoot it in the butt with an arrow. They hit with a 22, for 35 damage. They use a bonus action to hide in the stairwell.

Griffin casts Wrathful Smite. He rolls a 25 and a 27 to attack, which hit.

Hit 1 = 9 Slashing, 2 (halved from 4) Cold, 2 Psychic - 13
Hit 2 = 13 Slashing, 4 (halved from 8) Cold - 17.

30 total damage. The Galbrezu saves on Wisdom and is not frightened.

Jericho does some smacks - 26, 26, and a crit 1. Hit 1 does 23 damage, Hit 2 does 19 damage. On the third attack, the Galbrezu catches the blade of Jericho’s scimitar in one of his pincers. He gives Shane Bardic Inspiration.

Galbrezu has Jericho’s scimitar in one of his pincers. He rolls to damage the scimitar: 14. It’s not cracking, but Jericho sees some stress in the metal. It slaps Griffin with its other pincer. It hits with a 21. Griffin takes 9 Bludgeoning damage and is grappled. Then it casts Darkness, centered on itself.

Shane can’t see. He demands Griffin tell him whether or not he’s pointing at the Galbrezu. He reaches out to try to grab Griffin’s arm. He grabs Griffin’s butt. Then Ryo looks at her spells. She has a better idea. Shane casts Dispel Magic on the Darkness.

Nellie forces the Galbrezu to roll an Int save. It fails with a 15. Nellie uses Mind Sliver, for 3d6 Psychic damage: 11. For her next trick, Nellie backs the fuck up.

Serra makes the Galbrezu roll a Dex save. He has to subtract 1d4 from his roll thanks to Mind Spike - 16. That fails. The d4 made the difference. The Galbrerzu takes 16 Radiant damage. Serra also moves back to the corridor exit.

ROUND 2

Crimeny rolls a 21 to hit the Galbrezu’s butt, for 46 sneak attack damage. They shoot the Galbrezu’s ass so hard its head explodes.

The crew start to head down the stairs. The stairs go down for a while. As we descend, we begin to hear a steady thumping sound as of a heartbeat. The heat becomes almost unbearable. Well, only to the non-infernals. This is just a regular day for Griffin.

We are no longer in the Tower of London - we are well below ground. We finally exit through the mouth of a cave onto a large stone catwalk. A number of catwalks extend out over an enormous pit of hellfire and blood. In the center of this pit is a rough carved stone dais with a number of very ominous looking magic circles. In the center of that is a fleshy, pulsating mass - like an incubation cocoon. To the left and right, catwalks extend out to two circular platforms, which extend further south to two more catwalks and two more circular platforms. On each platform is a machine, actively pumping blood in this hellfire pit.

Interspersed are more acolytes. Time for Perception. Griffin rolls a 6.

Serra and Crimeny look out over this mass, and they see Jack the Ripper. He’s far towards the back - it looks like he’s overseeing one of the machines. On the opposite platform is something roughly the same size but much more imposing. Now Serra and Crimeny roll Arcana. They roll twin 16s. Serra sees an Abhorrent Overlord - her blood runs cold. That’s like the general of the damned. The fact that we have to deal with a Relentless Slasher is bad enough, the Overlord makes this a whole lot worse. Upper management is here.
