Session 132: The Battle Continues

ROUND 1

It’s Serra’s turn. She casts Mass Healing Word with her last 4th level spell slot. Everyone recovers 27HP. She chucks her mace at the closest Goomaster but misses with a 4.

ROUND 2

Firstly, Crimeny uses a Bonus Action to take advantage of their Flame Wall. They are Hiding. Then they move behind the throne with a 34 Stealth. Morlen can’t beat that number, especially with disadvantage. Crimeny’s flames and also Crimeny are now gone.

The pieces of Crimeny’s core are forced into the top part of the throne’s back. They’re lodged in pretty good. Crimeny rolls Arcana: 19. Crimeny has been around enough volatile magic, especially with this group. There are a number of things they could do to extricate the Pieces of Heart Crime, but considering that the ritual is already begun and Vecna’s Sovereignty is a very powerful artifact, it’s a wild card as to what will happen if the throne is destroyed or even if one of the pieces is freed.

Crimeny has some oil. Can they lube up the Pieces of Crime and then pry them out with the crowbar? They’ll use their action to lube them up. Prying them out will be another action. They roll Sleight of Hand to lube. They roll a 27. They make sure that oil gets in all the nooks and crannies.

Jericho is sassing Morlen, but he definitely sees Crimeny creeping up the back of Vecna’s Sovereignty and taking up the oil like one would take up a bottle of massage oil.

Morlen is 45 feet away from Jericho.

JERICHO: I do appreciate the attention you’re giving me, though I have to say, you’re not usually my type. You’re a little old for me, not gonna lie. Never let it be said that I don’t like the attention of a rich man.

Can Jericho roll to flirt? Can the bard roll to seduce??? He rolls Performance. He rolls a Nat 20+10 to seduce.

The sound of Morlen’s eyebrow arching is audible. He is looking Jericho up and down, admiring this goosey specimen that stands before him.

MORLEN: Well, it does appear that you can take quite the amount of punishment.

Jericho does still have an Action. Depending on what this Action is, it might sour the relations. Jericho casts Tasha’s Hideous Laughter at Oozemaster B. It fails its save. It falls prone, is incapacitated, and is unable to stand up for the duration. At the end of each of its turns it can make another Wisdom Saving Throw.

Since it’s a mass of souls, it doesn’t exactly fall prone, but it sags and undulates. The wailing laughter is really uncomfortable to hear.

For his Bonus Action, Jericho gives Bardic Inspiration to Crimeny, which he disguises as a wink at Morlen, who clutches his chest. He is charmed.

Morlen may be interested in Jericho’s charms, but not interested enough to not attack. Morlen stands from his seat on the throne. He moves to the edge of his magic circle array.

MORLEN: I would prefer it if things could be a little more intimate, so let’s dispatch with the chaff, shall we?

Morlen points at Shane. He says, "Goodbye." Shane drops dead. Morlen just cast Power Word Kill on Shane. BUT WAIT: Nellie casts Counterspell, but she fails the DC with a 12. Shane is super dead. He crumples to the ground, eating shit. His head smacks hard against the stone but it doesn’t matter because he’s dead. Ryo rolls a d20 to determine how undignified Shane’s death is: 10. He does the Peter Griffin death pose.

MORLEN: That’s better.

Shane’s soul still lives on in his soul ring.

Oozemaster B has to make a Wisdom Save to stop laughing at the end of its turn. It fails with a 12 and continues laughing. It finds Shane’s death absolutely hilarious.

Griffin is extremely upset that his good friend Shane has died. Out of everyone on this crew, he’s probably the only one who’s legitimately devastated. Serra calls Griffin on her rockie talkie. She tells him it’s okay, she has magic. He appreciates the reassurance, but that's not quite enough to negate the shock Griffy has just experienced.

Griffin uses a bonus action to cast Jump on himself. He rolls Athletics with Disadvantage to ascend the Goomaster. He uses his Cloak of the Athlete for this roll. Normally it gives him Advantage, but this time it’s just going to negate that Disadvantage. He rolls 21 Athletics to scale the boogedy, and climbs up that sucker real good, like Breath of the Wild Link ascending a vertical rock face or maybe a poisonous stone talus.

He takes 14 Acid damage from the Goomaster, and must endure an attack of opportunity as he exits its attack zone and leaps to the chandelier. The Goomaster hits him with a 26. It does 13 Bludgeoning and another 9 Acid.

He bounds up the Goomaster despite the burning Acid, and manages to get to the gross crest of its head. He does a flying leap from the top of its head. He rolls a 21 Dex Save to grab the chandelier. It starts to creak and sway wildly. He ends his turn hanging precariously from this chandelier by one hand.

Oozemaster A is a little cranky that Griffin just used it as a ladder. There is a little gnome next to it. But first it does attack Griffin. It hits with a 23, but Griffin reacts with a Shield spell to bump his AC up to 25, causing it to miss. Griffin knocks its attack aside in a burst of acid with his shield arm.

For its next trick, the Oozemaster makes a psuedopod attack as a bonus action on Nellie, but it misses with a 15.

You’ve got this, Nellie!! Pippinella slashes at the Oozemaster using her Level 5 Shadowblade. She rolls a 16 to hit. She hits the broad side of a barn! She does 19 Psychic damage to the Oozemaster. All of the souls scream in unison.

The Oozemaster used its reaction to roll an opportunity attack on Griffin, so she moves out of its attack Zone to regroup next to Serra without risking another hit.

Serra looks at Duke. Duke sighs. He knows what’s happening. In her professional medical opinion, Shane is dead-dead. Duke looks at Shane’s lifeless body and says, "Counterpoint: From the way Shane always acted, it seems like this is what he wanted."

Duke flies over to Shane and perches on his butt. Serra casts Revivify through Duke. The instant Serra casts Revivify, Duke screeches directly in Shane’s ear. Shane rolls a dice to see how chill he is in the face of Owl and/or Death. He got a nat 20: 22. He reaches up and grabs the bird by the neck. Then he realizes that it’s Duke and he lets him go.

ROUND 3

Time to pull this Crime from the stone. Crimeny will use their crowbar to pry. Time to roll Athletics. Probably with Bardic. Crimeny rolled a 19 on the die so that makes it an 18, plus the Bardic die which adds 7, so the total Athletics Roll is 25. Crimeny is able to get two of the three pieces free with that roll.

The ritual continues, but the magic surge has shifted. Something has happened. The shift in the air is enough to draw Morlen’s attention behind him. Crimeny uses a bonus action to Hide. Morlen immediately notices that two of the casing pieces are missing.

Crimeny finishes their turn by eating their two soul pieces. They cram them right into their mouth. They start to feel the change.

Now it’s Jericho’s turn. Morlen has turned around. He is no longer so enchanted by Jericho, he’s more concerned about what Crimeny was doing, but he doesn’t realize it’s Crimeny yet.

Jericho is going to cast Psychic Lance, which would require Morlen to make an INT save. Morlen saves with a 24, but he still takes half damage: 16 halved from 32. He winces in pain as he takes the psychic lance. Now he is getting flustered. Jericho chides him for taking his attention off him. He boldly moves his full 30 feet to approach Morlen. He uses his Bonus Action to rage. He’s low on spell slots, so now it’s time to start hitting things.

Morlen uses a Legendary Action to require a Wisdom Save from Jericho. Rippis in pippis, Jericho rolls a 6. Morlen whips around and levels a gaze filled with timeless rage at our goose. Jericho is now Frightened for the next minute, but he can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of his turns.

Seeing that Jericho’s demeanor has changed because of his fear, Morlen turns back to his throne. There’s just a wall behind the throne so it stands to reason that there is only one place for Crimeny to hide. He moves around the throne. He becomes irrationally angry, and points a finger at Crimeny.

Crimeny flips him off. Morlen makes a ranged spell attack. What a time for a fucking Nat 1. Morlen misses with a 13.

Crimeny is hunkered down, consuming the piece. Morlen comes up behind them. The metal gear solid alert sounds. Crimeny turns. Morlen points. Crimeny sticks up the middle finger. The spell goes off, and Crimeny tilts their head to the side and the spell wizzes past their ear. The magic in the area is going banana sandwich, and it is messing with Morlen’s spellcasting ability.

Before he does anything else, Shane quaffs one of his Superior Healing Potions. He recovers 32 HP.

He can see Morlen’s ass hanging out behind the throne. He has no reason to expect Crimeny is back there. He has no reason not to cast Death Stranding. He rolls Disadvantaged Insight to figure out where Crimeny is. His good roll was a 14 and his bad roll was a 4, for 6 total. Shane casts Death Stranding centered on Morlen.

Hunger of Hadar, Spell of the Year Edition, featuring Dante from Devil May Cry, and Knuckles.

Jericho can no longer see Morlen, so some of the effects of Fear are negated.

Shane looks dazed, confused, and angry. Shane stays right about where he’s at. He moves a little forward, away from the Oozemasters.

Oozemaster B is still under the effects of Tasha’s Hideous Laughter. It fails its wisdom save with a 1.

Griffin climbs up on the chandelier. He casts Expeditious Retreat as a Bonus Action. He rolls a Nat 20 to hit the chain holding the chandelier. He fucking hits it.

He’s got his Eagle Whistle in his mouth, ready to go. He is buffed with Jump and Expeditious Retreat. With a single swing, he cleaves the chain suspending the massive chandelier, and uses the inertia of his mighty blow to swing to launch himself across the walkway toward the second chandelier. He is blowing his Eagle Whistle, which allows him to fly at a pace up to twice his walking speed. He ends his turn in midair. He’ll land on the second chandelier next round.

Oozemaster A moves in front of Nellie and Serra, blocking Serra. It’s going to do its spell-cast & tentacle slap combo. It attacks Nellie and hits her with a 17. She has to roll a Con Save, which she beefs with a 7. She takes 10 Poison damage, and is poisoned until the end of her next turn as a ray of sickness shoots forth. A poisoned creature has Disadvantage on Attack Rolls and Ability Checks. She rolls Concentration and maintains the shadow blade.

It slaps at Serra and crits to hit. She takes 16 Bludgeoning and 15 Acid damage. The Oozemaster takes 4 Radiant Clanggeden damage.

Nellie is poisoned. She’s gonna keep slashing. She rolls a 24 to hit, and does 22 Psychic damage. The Oozemaster wails in pain, and seems to briefly lose its form.

Serra uses a bonus action to quaff a Superior Healing Potion and regains 23 HP. She uses Sacred Flame as her Action. Oozemaster rolls a -3 on its Dex Save. It takes double damage: 34 hurt points. It wails as it is set alight by radiant fire. Bits of its gooey form are sloughing off of its body, but it’s still upright for now.

ROUND 4

Crimeny is in the Fap Zone. They take 4d6 Cold damage. Crimeny takes 11 damage.

Crimeny can use a Bonus Action to locate the last piece of soul. They can instinctively find it. They are drawn to it. So instead of being gentle to pull this out, they use the crowbar to smack it out instead. Crimeny makes a melee attack on Vecna’s Sovereignty. They roll a 19 to hit the chair. Next is a straight Strength roll. Crimeny rolls a 16 on the die for a nice clean 15.

Crimeny gives the back of the throne a mighty whack. Crimeny has never been a strong boy, but they call forth a reserve of strength that they’ve never tapped into before. They hear it knock free, then hit the seat of Vecna’s Sovereignty and then they hear it clank down the stairs.

Crimeny goes after it. Go forth and crime. They’re in difficult terrain, so they can’t quite get to the piece this round.

With the final piece knocked free, the spell has been irrevocably interrupted. Crimeny hears Morlen, even over the soft slurping and wet slapping of tentacles, start to scream as the magics that were swirling about the throne are suddenly refocused. For a second it looks like the entire chamber itself might just straight up be destroyed. It’s so intense that even the Oozemasters turn their gaze away from their respective targets.

Griffin is sailing between two chandeliers.

Morlen’s voice slowly warps into something very inhuman. There is a coldness to it. It sounds like bone grating on bone.

The chandelier that Griffin cut free hits the ectoplasmic surface of the pool, which erupts in a plume of fire. The entire pool ignites. The wailing souls that were trapped in the ichor start to spiral about in the flame. They begin to converge, mixing with the necromantic energies on this massive Death Stranding dome that Shane has put up.

Slowly Morlen’s screaming turns into a roar.

No one can see what has happened to Morlen, but it’s possible to surmise as an ear-piercing skrionk rips through the air. Crimeny can’t see it, but they have an idea of what’s there.

It is an out-of-control Draco Lich.
